Leed ® for New Construction – Residential

Foard Panels Can Help Your Home Obtain
 LEED® For Homes Certification

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a widely acknowledged standard for defining and measuring “green buildings.” It is based on a point system. Foard structural insulated panels contribute to a variety of points toward LEED® for Homes certification in residential new construction projects.

For more information about LEED® for Homes certification, visit the US Green Building Council website at www.usgbc.org.

CONTRIBUTING LEED® FOR HOME POINTS

Energy and Atmosphere
Foard panels meet Energy Star® guidelines for energy performance. An ENERGY STAR-labeled home can receive up to 34 points for LEED® for Homes certification following the Performance Path under Energy & Atmosphere.

Via the Prescriptive Path under Energy & Atmosphere, a non-ENERGY STAR labeled home can receive up to 2 points for insulation that exceeds 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) requirements, and up to 3 points for minimal envelope leakage when testing by an energy rater verifies appropriate low levels of air infiltration.

Materials and Resources
Minimize construction waste by designing the wall and roof of your home using standard panel sizes. Taking advantage of Foard’s pre-cut service will also reduce job site waste. Your home can receive up to 3 points for achieving certain levels of waste reduction.

Foard panels can also earn points by qualifying as “environmentally preferable” through:

* Containing recycled content: Foard’s XPS foam core contains 15% post-industrial recycled content. HEADLOK panel screws contain 25% post consumer recycled material by weight, Gypsum Board used in Foard’s curtain wall and dry wall clad panels contains 18% total recycled content.

* Having low or no VOC emissions: Foard OSB, drywall, adhesive, and foam cores have low out-gassing and contain no urea-formaldehyde.

Waste Management
Minimize construction waste by designing the wall and roof of your home using standard panel sizes. Your home can receive up to 3 points for achieving certain levels of waste reduction.

* Having Foard Panel pre-cut your panels will also reduce the amount of waste being diverted to a landfill from your job site.

Leed ® for New Construction – Commercial

Foard Panels Can Help Your Building Obtain LEED® for
New Construction Certification

Contributing LEED® for New Construction Points

Foard panels can contribute to the following LEED® points for your commercial construction project, by category (credit numbers in parentheses):

Energy and Atmosphere
Minimum Energy Performance (Prerequisite 2) AND Optimize Energy Performance (Credit 1): The energy efficiency of Foard panels can help your building’s energy performance meet and exceed ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004 standards. Meeting the standard satisfies the LEED® prerequisite and performance above the standard earns up to 10 points for LEED® for New Construction certification. There are also other paths to receiving points for energy performance. Speak with your energy rater regarding the best Foard panel choice for your project.

Materials and Resources
Construction and Waste Management (Credit 2.1, 2.2): If architects know that Foard Panels will be used your building can be designed to match panel dimensions, thereby reducing cut-off waste. Taking advantage of Foard’s pre-cut service will also reduce job site waste. Diverting at least 50% of non-hazardous construction and demolition debris (by weight or volume) from disposal earns 1 LEED® point, and diverting 75% earns 2 LEED® points.

Recycled Content (Credit 4.1,4.2): The foam core of Foard’s XPS panel contains 15% post-industrial recycled content. HEADLOK panel screws contain 25% post consumer recycled material by weight, Gypsum Board used in Foard’s curtain wall and dry wall clad panels contains 18% total recycled content. Your new construction can receive 1 LEED® point for using materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (based on cost) of the total value of the materials in the project. Your project can receive 2 LEED® points if the materials contain a total of 20% recycled content based on cost.

Indoor Environmental Quality
Low-emitting Materials – Composite Wood and Agrifiber Products (Credit 4.4): The use of interior composite wood and agrifiber products containing no urea-formaldehyde resins can earn 1 LEED® point for certification. The OSB, drywall, adhesive, and foam cores used in Foard panels have low out-gassing and contain no urea-formaldehyde resins.
